2013 Glammy Scholarship Awards - Finalists

The following volunteers from the THHS Chapter of Glamour Gals were recognized for their outstanding commitment to GG's mission and their service to their senior community.

Rohanie Nukhai - 2013 Co-President Finalist
"When it comes down to it, we're just like [the elderly]. I try to make my chapter understand that fact. Sometimes we're scared of other people because we think they are different. We're all the same though, been through the same thing in differerent ways. When my chapter understood that, they were no longer afraid."

Jillian Burke - 2013 Chapter Rally Girl Finalist
"I feel that senior citizens, people who have worked hard their entire lives and possess life experience, are often overlooked. One woman [we visited], Evelyn, had a job where she traveled the world, visiting places like China, Thailand, and North Africa; we can understand that her life was not always at a nursing home. Our actions demonstrate that older people are valued and give them the proper respect they deserve."

Amy Zheng - 2013 Daniel and Lucille Valerio Outstanding Volunteer Award Finalist
" That day was actually the first time I've ever painted nails for a senior woman and in the beginning I was afraid to file or cut their nails because their hands looked so fragile and delicate. Being a GG volunteer meant a lot of "first times" for me and I've never regretted it."

Yaelin Caba - 2013 Daniel and Lucille Valerio Outstanding Volunteer Award Finalist
"I had always imagined that I would lose emotion and lose pieces of myself as I aged. I was wrong. Who I am now, as I have learned, makes up a great deal of whom I will become later in life. I just need to make sure that I make a great attempt at overcoming the obstacles I face and also receive kind gestures with love."

Mi Jin Park - 2013 Daniel and Lucille Valerio Outstanding Volunteer Award Finalist
"I've never seen either of my grandmothers. They both passed away long before my birth. I never knew what it felt like to have a grandmother. In kindergarten, I begged my parents to "buy" a grandmother; it felt strange to see others leave school with grandmothers. Although the [GlamourGals] visits are once a month, the two hours fill my emptiness. I wholeheartedly cherish time with the senior, Peggy. Her curly hair, red nails, and circular frames reflect what my grandmother could've looked like if she were here today. The treasure from this experience cannot be exchanged with anything in the world."
