Congratulations to the Latin Club who traveled to Bronx Science on June 11th to compete in the second annual New York City Certamen Invitational. Once again our teams were highly successful. The team of Selma Ljaljicic, Stephanie Jin, Julia Fusfeld and Keegan Valbuena took first place at the Incipiens level. The team of Essie Assibu, Peter Michelli, Lily Hsu and Ashley Guzman took third place. Further, the team of Warren Cheng, Ioana Paunescu, Melissa Cheng and Pryanca Zaman took third place at the Profectus level.

The 2008 Otto Burgdorf Research Competition winners have been announced, and two Harrisites were awarded highest honors: Karen Bulaklak (Genetics) and Murrel Pereira (Zoology). We proudly congratulate them!

The 2008 B'nai Brith International Contest, Diverse Minds Youth Writing Challenge winners have been announced, and two Harrisites were awarded highest honors: Kristina Rudulfo (1st place) and Safa Siddiqui (2nd). Kristina's entry "The Other Von Higgely," an original written and illustrated story, has been published and will be distributed to NYC schools and libraries. Kristina won a $5,000 college scholarship, and her teacher, Ms. Aliza Sherman received a $500 stipend for classroom materials. Safa Siddiqui won a $2000 college scholarship. We proudly congratulate them!

Kenneth Bonamo Jr. has been selected to succeed Thomas Cunningham as the third Principal of Townsend Harris. He will assume the principalship on July 1.
We wish him great success.

We proudly congratulate Gabriel Felder for placing 3rd citywide in the 2008 Quality of Life Competition for his project "Sight for Independence", and continuing a nine-year Harris tradition of success in this competition.

Essie Assibou is Harris' 10th winner of the Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest, placing 3rd, and winning $500. She spoke as the common man/woman who benefited from Roosevelt's policies and programs, and of his conservation measures. Congratulations to Essie for her excellent research, writing and performance.

Townsend Harris has twelve Financial Literacy Scholars! Congratulations to Seniors Priscilla Aguilar, Hira Ahmed, Ann Arackal, Vito Arena, Noah Bonner, Warren Cheng, Pooja Dilawri, Sherese Francis, Caroline Kang, Marisa Lupo, Tara Sussman, and Maggie Wong who were honored this week at the Museum of American Finance by W!se ( Working in Support of Education) for attaining a score of 95% and higher on the Financial Literacy Certification test.

Townsend Harris High School was selected as the 2008 Intel School of Distinction award winner for Science Excellence, and will receive a $10,000 cash award in recognition of our accomplishment. In selecting Townsend Harris for this award, the Intel Judges pointed to our rich and diverse curriculum that "capitalized on teachers' strengths and addressed student interests." Also noted was the mentoring our teachers provide students enabling them to participate in a wide range of science activities such as Science Olympiad, the Brain Bee, Research and FIRST Robotics.

The Languages Other Than English Awards Ceremony will be held on May 28, 2008 from 3:30 to 5:30 pm in our Auditorium. Honors will be awarded in Latin, Classical Greek, Japanese and Mythology. Please join us.

    We proudly congratulate Jeffrey Wong for his perfect score of 100 at the NYSSMA All-State Orchestra audition in violin.

    Congratulations to 3rd-year Japanese student Sandra Villayi, one of nine finalists in the NECTJ Japanese Speech Contest.

    Three teams competed in the National Japan Bowl in Washington DC this year: Our 2nd-year team, Warren K. Cheng, Mandy Trinh and Peter Li placed 10th; our 3rd-year team, Sandra Villanyi, Reena Sam and Carmen Lin placed 9th and our 4th-year team, Jose Pulido and Deborah Chang placed the 8th nationwide.

    We are very proud of Gabriel Felder, our 2007-2008 finalist in the prestigious WISE Quality of Life Competition. Gabe's project is titled "Sight for Independence: Empowering the Elderly " . He will be competing in the scholarship round of this competition on Thursday, May 29th. We wish him continued success!

    Townsend Harris is one of three finalists on the high school level for the prestigious Intel Schools of Distinction Award for its outstanding and innovative Science program. The finalists will be announced mid-June. Harris was the recipient of a 21st Century Schools of Distinction Award for its Community Service Program in 2004, the first year of this program.

    The THHS Latin Club had another successful year at the Suffolk County Certamen Competition at Stony Brook University. Our second year team, Essie Assibu, Julia Fusfeld, Peter Michelli and Lily Hsu, placed 1st. Our third year team, Warren Cheng, Melissa Cheng, Ioana Paunescu and Ksenija Matijevic, captured 2nd place.

    Congratulations to The Townsend Harris Mock Trial Team and their advisor,
    Ms. Getting, for becoming the Queens Borough Champions in the Justice Resource Centers Mock Trial Competition and continuing on to the city wide quarter finals.

    Youth Venture helps people start new youth-led organizations to address local quality of life issues. More than 500 proposals to improve the quality of life in New York City were submitted, and 85 proposals were selected as nominees; three Harrisites - Kayla Hollins, Stephanie Pak, Bianca Edirisinghe- are among these. Winners, who, will receive $1000 to implement their proposals, will be announced at the Quality of Life Finals Ceremony in June. We wish them continued success. Congratulations them and to Mr. Franco Scardino, their teacher.

    We proudly congratulate Murrel Pereira, Dana Alliance NYC Brain Bee Champion and Marvee Gay Espiritu for her 4th place finish. Marvee also competed in the Long Island Brain Bee, and captured 1st place. Kudos to Ms. Shen - her A.P. Psychology students have placed in the top 3 in the NYC Brain Bee each year since 2004.

    The Brain Bee tests students' knowledge of neuroscience. Both Murrel and Marvee, reigning NYC and LI Brain Bee Champions will go on to compete in the National Brain Bee representing New York City, and Long Island, respectively, on March 14th and 15th, at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. We wish them continued success.

    Harris's 3 Science Olympiad Teams took 4th, 7th and 8th places in yesterday's NYC Metropolitan Science Olympiad, capturing 25 medals and 16 additional 6th-10th place finishes. Kudos to them, and Head Coach Mr. Sangiorgi and Assistant Coaches Ms. Cooper, Mr. Jones and Mr. Porzio. Harris's team will represent NYC at the state competition on March 14th-15th at West Point along with teams representing Stuyvesant and Cardozo High Schools.

    We proudly congratulate our Research Students and their teachers, Ms. Brustein, Ms. Cooper, Ms. Eaton, Mr. Porzio and Mr. Scardino, for their success in the NYC Science and Engineering Fair. More than 400 students submitted their independent social science or science research papers to this competition. 10% of the finalists in the first level of this competition are from Harris!     The W!SE Financial Literacy Certification Program named Townsend Harris a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence for the Class of 2006's performance on the Financial Literacy exam. In addition, Jaime Byrne, Franco Scardino and Linda Steinmann were named Gold Star Teachers and recognized for their excellence in financial education.

    16 students scored 95, or higher, and were named Financial Literacy Scholars: Michael Avgoustidis, Richard Edele, Alice Moy, Laura Schubert, Richard Huynh, Jason Lee, Samual Oh, Elizabeth Pryor, Abadin Rani, Jeremy Teperman, Lauren Wong, Lillian Fosteris, David Bournas Ney, Robert McCullagh, Albert Vetere and Marsha Sukach.
    Kudos to Richard Edele and Michael Avgoustidis for achieving perfect scores.

    The PSAL Heisman Award is given each year to the student who is best in his or her field. We are very proud of our 4 Heisman winners! They are: Devotia Moore (Cross-Country), Maureen Mc Cluskey (Swimming), Amy Feng (Fencing) and Linda Thai (handball). We congratulate them and their coaches!

    Townsend Harris dominated the Quality of Life Competition winning two of the top three prizes. We proudly congratulate June Xie (1st place), Lavinia Pascal (2nd place)

    We proudly congratulate our Latin Club, winners of 1st and 3rd place in the 1st annual NYC Latin Certamen competition. Kudos to Mr. Owens, club advisor.     Newsweek magazine has again listed Townsend Harris as one of the best public high schools in the US. Harris was ranked 366 on Newsweek's list of the top 1200 schools for 2007!

    According to Department of Education statistics, Townsend Harris was the most popular, non-specialized public high school in NYC in 2007. More 8th graders selected Harris as their first choice than any other high school in the 5 boroughs. Read more...

    We are very proud of our winners in this year's International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). Each of the students who participated medaled in thier event: Markrete Krikorian - 4th place, Chemistry; Bushra Wazed - 3rd place, Animal Behavior; and Ben Aronowicz, Warren Cheng, and Erin Zeqja - 3rd place, Physics. These students competed against 1500 students from 40 countries. All students who compete at ISEF had previously won in their category at regional competitions. We congratulate them, their teachers - Ms. Eaton, Mr. Jones, Mr. Porzio,
    Ms. Ludvik, Ms. Brustein, and their Queens College mentors, Professors Baker, Gersten and Menon and Mr. Chatterjee.

    We are very proud of the success of the 432 students who participated in this year's National Latin Exam, garnering the following awards: 158 Summa Cum Laude; 141 Maxima Cum Laude; 53 Magna Cum Laude, and 36 Cum Laude. This rigorous examination is taken by more than 134,000 students representing all 50 states and 13 foreign countries. Our results were better than any other school worldwide. Kudos to Ms. Mars, and our Latin instructors - Ms. Landry, Mr. Hagerty, Ms. Kouklanakis, Ms. Laderoute and Mr. Owens.

    Harris is ranked #1 in NYC on graduation rate (99%).

    Harris dominated this year's NYC Quality of Life Competition, capturing 4 of the 10 finalist spots. Congratulations to: Valeria Chi, Lavinia Pascal, Alexandra Stark, June Xie and Mr. Scardino. We wish them continued success in the final round on May 14th!

    Congratulations to Coach Michlewitz and the Girls Fencing Team for clinching the Queens Division Championship.
    The team's record is 7 - 0.

    Also to be congratulated are Margaret Ngo, who finished 1st in the NYC PSAL Novice Tournament. Teammates Rupinder Garcha finished 2nd, and Sunny Liu and Shelby Hecht finished 9th and 10th respectively. Go Hawks!

    Congratulations to our Fed Challenge Team, Nicole Kim, Kevin Liang, Lisa Liu , Alice Moy, and Noureen Ramzan, for making it to the semi-finals on Friday, April 27th. We wish them continued success.

    Harris's Science Olympiad Team, which captured the NYC Regional Science Olympiad Championship in February, yesterday came in 16th statewide in the NYS Competition, capturing 10 top 10 finishes in a field of 48 teams.     5 Harrisites, Markrete Krikorian (Chemistry), Bushra Wazed (Animal Behavior) and Ben Aronowitz, Warren Cheng, and Erin Zeqja (Physics) won their respective categories in the NYC Science and Engineering Fair. More than 900 papers were submitted to this competition. Congratulations to them, their teachers and their Queens College Mentors!

    2007 THHS/Patriot Group Fundraiser
    THHS students, staff, alumni, family and friends are all invited to join us at 9 am on April 21st to celebrate the lives of the 343 members of the FDNY who gave their lives for their city on September 11th, 2001 by participating in a 5k walk that will begin on the THHS/Queens College Campus. Following the walk, we and members of the FDNY will co-host a barbeque in our courtyard. Musical entertainment will be provided by students.

    Congratulations to Coach Tim Conner, Assistant Coach Mark Benjamin, and the entire Harris' Girls Indoor Track Team for winning the Queensborough Indoor Track Championship. We wish them continued success in the upcoming citywide competition.


    Harris' SciOly Team 1 won the Regional Championship at the NYC Science Olympiad on Feb. 10th and THHS-Team 2 took 7th place, and THHS-Team 3 took 9th place in stiff competition.

    Harris will compete in the NYS competition Mar. 9th-10th at West Point.

    Townend Turtles, our Girls Varsity Swim Team,
    coached by Mr. Jordan and Ms. O'Keefe
    won the NYC Championship for the second year in a row!
    This also marks the 18th year they have won the Queens championship!

    Our Girls Varsity Cross-Country Track Team, coached by Mr. Connor, are "as bad as they wannna be" according to the NY Daily News. They once again are the Queens Champions and will now compete for the City title.
    We wish them well.

    Go Hawks! Our Varsity Fencing Team, coached by Ms. Michlewitz, won the Queens Championship (11/1) and will now fence in the City Championship playoffs.

    The PATRIOT GROUP 9/11 MEMORIAL COMMITTEE extends their gratitude and love to the more than 350 people who braved the wind and rain to honor the 343 firefighters who sacrificed their lives on September 11, 2001 that others might live.
    Each walker wore the name of one of the firefighters who perished
    to honor their heroism and sacrifice.
